Proposed HUD rules target immigrant families and may make over 55,000 children homeless
In this administration’s ongoing assault on immigrants, the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Department, the Federal agency responsible for policy and programs that address America’s housing needs and responsible for housing programs such as Section 8 and public housing, have proposed plans that may displace more than 55,000 children. HUD aims to eliminate mixed member families, families that have a mixture of citizens and non-citizens, by requiring all non-citizen members of the family verify their status. Those not found eligible will have 150 days or less to vacate their subsidized dwellings. Call to Action New York Mennonite Immigration Programs opposes laws that go against the wellbeing of immigrant children and families we encourage you to raise your voice in opposition to the HUD proposed rules by submitting a public comment to the Office of the General Counsel, which is receiving comments on the HUD proposal until July 6, 2019. You may make your electronic submission to the Federal eRulemaking Portal at: https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=HUD-2019-0044 Suggested message: I strongly oppose this rule because it adversely affects many children and families which have legal status and/or are American citizens. It also aims to target those that need housing assistance propelling them into homelessness. References The Federal Registrar (May 10, 2019).
