As Isabelle touched her pregnant belly, she wondered what was in store for her and her little one. Organizing donated clothes in a Queens shelter, Isabelle was grateful to be in a safe space. “In Venezuela, we were going hungry. In order to take care of my baby, I had to leave.” The New York Mennonite Immigration Program brought donated clothes to the shelter, which gave us an opportunity for a personal connection. As the bags were being opened, Isabelle found a cute little blanket and shyly asked, “Can I have this one?” Our staff listened to Isabelle’s story, offering hope and a path to dignity. As Isabelle wrapped herself in the blanket and the comfort of Maria’s words, she was grateful.
Manuel is a gentleman experiencing housing insecurity in the Bronx. In his home country of Venezuela, he worked in law enforcement. Manuel and his family became a target of the gangs. In fact, his teenage brother was killed by the gangs. Fearing for his life and the safety of his family, he migrated north. For several months, Manuel lived in a tent city in Mexico near the border. Today, he is very grateful to be living in a shelter. He longs for the day he can return to his home country and be rejoining his family and friends. The New York Mennonite Immigration Program staff sat with Manuel and heard his story. We did a need and legal assessment of his case and referred him to the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. Pray for Manuel as he secures an attorney to handle his case. Pray that he will be able to be reunited with his family.
