On June 16, 2020, the Administration released its newest assault against immigrants when the Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a proposed rule which would ultimately eradicate the asylum process and leave vulnerable women and children at risk by forcing them to return to the very risk that many times cause them their lives.  The proposed rule would:

• raise initial requirement for those seeking asylum at the U.S./Mexico border ignoring the realities of those needing protection e.g. having to flee in short notice, having to leave with little or nothing, the effects of mental, emotional, and physical trauma of asylum seekers;
• eliminating protections to those escaping violence from non-state actors furthering its racist and xenophobic attack against those fleeing violence in Central American countries like Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, targeting women, children, and victims of other gender-based persecution;
• requiring that adjudicators consider factors that are irrelevant to the person’s need of protection, weighing negatively if a person has traveled between ports of entry and would deny most applicants who have traveled through third countries before arriving to the U.S. border and applicants to be denied for things such as not paying taxes in the U.S; 
• eliminating due process and fairness for asylum seekers aiming to strip away the right to due process by allowing judges to deny petitions before asylum seekers are able to present their full case before the court.  

As people of faith we are called to lend our voices to defend those seeking protection and speak out against injustice.  The Administration’s proposed rule goes against international treaties which protect asylum seekers and violates human rights.  New York Mennonite Immigration Program has partnered with CLINIC to encourage all of our churches, constituents, partners, and communities engage by submitting a comment defending our asylum seekers. PROTEJAMOS A LOS SOLICITANTES DE ASILO-LLAMADA A LA ACCIÓN

​El 16 de junio de 2020, la Administración publicó su nuevo asalto contra los inmigrantes cuando la Oficina Ejecutiva de Revisión de Inmigración (EOIR) y el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) publicaron una propuesta de norma  que en última instancia erradicaría el proceso de asilo y dejaría a las mujeres y niños vulnerables en riesgo obligándolos a volver al riesgo que muchas veces les causan sus vidas.  La norma propuesta:

• aumentar el requisito inicial para aquellos que buscan asilo en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México ignorando las realidades de quienes necesitan protección, por ejemplo, tener que huir en corto plazo, tener que irse con poco o nada, los efectos del trauma mental, emocional y físico de los solicitantes de asilo;
  
• eliminar las protecciones a aquellos que escapan de la violencia de actores no estatales que promueven su ataque racista y xenófobo contra quienes huyen de la violencia en países centroamericanos como Honduras, El Salvador, y Guatemala, dirigida a mujeres, niños y víctimas de otra persecución por motivos de género;
  
• exigir que los jueces consideren factores que son irrelevantes para la necesidad de protección de la persona, sopesando  negativamente si una persona ha viajado entre puertos de entrada y negaría a la mayoría de los solicitantes que han viajado a través de terceros países antes de llegar a la frontera de los Estados Unidos y a los solicitantes a ser negados por cosas como no pagar impuestos en los Estados Unidos; 
  
• eliminar el debido proceso y la justicia parasolicitantes de asilo con el objetivo de eliminar el derecho al debido proceso permitir que los jueces nieguen las peticiones antes de que los solicitantes de asilo puedan presentar su caso completo ante el tribunal.  

Como personas de fe, estamos llamados a prestar nuestra voz para defender a quienes buscan protección y hablar en contra de la injusticia.  La norma propuesta por la Administración va en contra de los tratados internacionales que protegen a los solicitantes de asilo y violan los derechos humanos.  El Programa de Inmigración Menonita de Nueva York se ha asociado con CLINIC para alentar a todas nuestras iglesias, electores, socios y comunidades que participan presentando un comentario defendiendo a nuestros solicitantes de asilo. Sólo tenemos hasta el 15 de julio de 2020 para comentar. Para enviar un comentario haga clic aquí
